The Bumbys
-A handkerchief’d, sunglassed, non-descript couple sit behind two type writers, occasionally looking up to get a visual of their subject, you. This is Gill and Jill Bumby, a masked couple who spontaneously pop up at parties with their typewriters in tow, giving a “Fair and Honest Appraisal” based on appearance. I attended the Levi’s new collection event last night in SoHo and even though there was an open bar, the longest line was by far in front of the Bumby table.
The Bumbys deliver their typed assessments on notecards which include a numbered rating (1-10), referencing history, pop-culture and everything in between as my friend was compared to Mike Miller (I’m assuming the Comic Illustrator) to show just how creative this dynamic duo is.
The most impressive aspect about these two is that for four hours, they sat behind the typewriters churning out an original appraisal every two to three minutes. Take that writers block…
